One tip for new bursars/business managers?
Always plan for a surplus above budget as boards like pleasant surprises, make the Principal and Board Chair look good, helps you keep your job. There are many wonderful colleagues out there who are always happy to share their knowledge so don't hesitate to ask. Get involved with ASBA and attend the meetings and conferences, you will learn a lot and meet some great people.
And a bonus 11th Question: The story behind the photo of The Lion, The Stick and the Bursar? (with apologies to CS Lewis)
While on safari in Africa I had the opportunity to get up close with a pride of lions. The guides tell you to carry a stick in case the lions turn on you, and to whack them on the nose to give you time to make your escape. Hence the expression all Business Managers can relate to: walk softly and carry a big stick!
