Philanthropy in Education - A Presentation by Shamal Dass, JB Were

ASBA WA members enjoyed the professional development session on Philanthropy in Education on August 10, 2017. Hosted by NAB in their St Georges Terrace Boardroom (nice view!), Shamal Dass (Head of Philanthropic Services – JB Were) gave a fascinating presentation on the state of philanthropy in Australia, and in particular, the opportunity that exists for schools to better understand and benefit from gift giving.

Shamal highlighted what was possible with along term strategy, pointing to the what is renowned to be the zenith of philanthropic gift giving, Harvard University.

"Today, more than half of Harvard College students receive need-based financial aid, and their families pay an average of only $12,000 annually. More than three quarters of the Class of 2016 graduated debt-free. Families with incomes up to $150,000 and typical assets pay 10 percent or less of their annual incomes. Access and affordability have also been major focuses of the successful Harvard Campaign, with $907 million raised so far for student financial aid."

For Australian independent Schools and Colleges, his advice was to start with "friendraising" as the foundation of good fundraising, but warned that alumni and "friends of" events and functions by themselves was an expensive investment of time and goodwill unless part of a larger plan to create the right environment for gift giving and bequests.

"My advice to school Business Managers and Heads of Development is to understand the Return on Investment for your various fundraising activities... so that you can help guide your Boards and alumni or 'old scholars' associations towards getting more benefit from the philanthropy of your school communities."

A copy of Shamal's presentation is attached, including further information on JB Were's capabilities to support philanthropy in schools. Good material for your next Board Meeting!

Our thanks to NAB for supporting this PD event.
